The Sea Otters of Morro Bay, California

Morro Bay's Most Beloved Residents

Here at Morro Bay Whale Watching, we obviously love whales. But there’s another marine mammal we see on the majority of our trips that also holds a special place in our hearts: the sea otter.

There's something special about watching a sea otter float on its back in the calm waters of Morro Bay. Whether they’re cracking open a clam, wrapping itself in kelp, or carrying a pup on its belly, the sight never gets old.

If you’re hoping to see otters for yourself on your next trip to Morro Bay, here’s what you need to know!

When to See Otters in Morro Bay

Morro Bay has an active sea otter population year-round, and they tend to stick close to shore, making for excellent viewing opportunities. While the period between October and January is peak season for otter viewing (since this is when pupping occurs), it’s common to see otters regularly all-year-long. For optimal viewing, visit in the morning or early evening when otters are the most active, and choose a day with calm bay conditions to make it easier to spot them floating by.

Where to Spot Sea Otters in Morro Bay

In Morro Bay, otters are often easy to spot from the water and on land. While you may see them from any point overlooking the bay, we recommend heading to the North end of the Embarcadero between Beach Street and Great American Fish Company for prime views.

But the best way to see these adorable creatures (in our humble opinion), is by boat! Whether you take a Sub Sea Tour or rent a kayak or paddle board, you’ll have a more immersive experience seeing them from the water at a safe and respectful distance.

A note on etiquette: you can help keep the population healthy by not creating any disturbances. If the otters change their behavior or swim away, you're too close. For more information on how to safely view otters from your vessel, check out Sea Otter Savvy’s guidelines.

The Southern Sea Otter’s Conservation Story

The sea otters you see today represent one of wildlife conservation's great comeback stories. According to UC Santa Cruz, sea otters were hunted for their pelts during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the fur trade reduced the global population from between 150,000 and 300,000 animals to just about 2,000. At that number, the species seemed unlikely to survive.

Fortunately, conservation efforts have made a major difference, and the population of southern sea otters has grown. While their numbers are still far below historical levels, the trajectory looks good, and we are fortunate to see so many thriving in Morro Bay.
